Bel Air

bel_air-smBel-Air - it means "good air", but really it was named after a tennis player who stuck oil in the 1920's. Now it is home to some of the most exclusive of LA's exclusive canyon gated communities.

Bel Air is generally subdivided into three distinct neighborhoods: East Gate Old Bel Air, West Gate Bel Air, and Upper Bel Air. The largest tracts are mostly closest to Sunset, and the "new money" homes are further up in the Canyons.

Multi-family housing is not permitted within the community and ordinances regarding architectural styles, landscaping, and lot sizes exist to preserve Bel Air. No apartments or condos are allowed. Unlike Beverly Hills, Bel Air has no residential sidewalks in attempts to discourage the public from walking around the community. Bel Air is also patrolled by local security companies, so if you plan to walk or bike through the area, be prepared for them to "make contact".
